Ah, Moonstone Grove. A place unlike any other in Mytharia. Here, the trees are ancient, their twisted branches dripping with leaves that catch silver in the faintest hint of moonlight. The ground beneath your feet is soft with moss, but don’t get too comfortable. Maybe don’t stand still for too long, some patches might just move, taking your footsteps on an unplanned detour.
Nestled just outside the bustling citadel of Mythari, lies a place where the laws of magic dance to their own rhythm: Moonstone Grove. It’s a region where reality bends just enough to keep visitors on their toes. This is a region of Mytharia that is as beautiful as it is unpredictable. Here, magic doesn’t simply exist. It thrives, blooming like the wild flora that covers the landscape… From the moment you step into the Grove, the air is filled with the mingling scents of wildflowers and rich, earthy undertones. The ground beneath your feet is a spongy, moss-covered carpet that seems to shift and squish. If you’re really unlucky, it will slide away from under you, as if the forest floor itself enjoys helping you fall over.
Crystals sprout like oversized flowers from the ground, intricate little beauties. Each one catches and bends light into a kaleidoscope of colours that dance across the path. Moonstones, scattered like enchanted lanterns, cast a soft, ethereal glow that lights up the winding paths. At night, their glow intensifies. Creating a mesmerising web of light that makes you feel like the stars have come down to play among the trees.
They’re not just for decoration. They contain many properties, some of them even magical. But it can be an experiment to figure out if they are helpful or not. You can often hear them humming softly through the night, resonating with the rhythm of the moons overhead, guiding those who are lost or perhaps luring them deeper into the Grove’s heart. But we’ll come back to that.
The Grove is a place where every turn reveals something new, and every sound seems to be whispering secrets just out of reach. So, wander with wonder, and remember: in the Grove, magic isn’t just an idea; it’s an experience. Many have tried to harness the powers of the Grove over the years, but none have been successful. It simply is a source of power that one can only learn to live besides. To try and tame it would be like trying to capture the wind; it’s best to let it dance around you, a partner in the never-ending waltz of Mytharia’s mysteries.
I might have given the impression that Moonstone Grove was an empty place. So let’s just take a moment to mention that it is a thriving ecosystem with many wonderful residents. Each as quirky and fascinating as the Grove itself. If you wonder far enough into the fields and forests, you might well find yourself among the Lunaris, a moonlit folk who draw their power directly from the stars. Their pale skin glitters under the moonlight. It was a pleasure to discover that they have some rather wonderful abilities, known to wax and wane with each phase of the moon. During a full moon, they are said to be at their most powerful, able to shift into the form of radiant moon beasts that glide silently through the trees. A few got across the veil once or twice, and the humans are still absolutely besotted with the full-moon beasts they call werewolves, although it seems they have embellished a few details and skipped out on some others. On a new moon, however, they are quieter and harder to find, often blending into the shadows of their world.
Although calling them “fairies” might be a bad idea, but for want of a better word, there simply isn’t any you would understand. These delicate, winged beings, known as the Sylphira, flutter between the trees. For the most part, they seem to be made of stardust and whispers. These curious little tricksters of the Grove are small, as nimble as a squirrel on a caffeine high, and ever so mischievous. These pesky little beings have a talent for bending reality to their will. They might get bored and make you forget why you entered the Grove in the first place. Or if it amuses them, they might send you chasing after a flickering light that doesn’t exist. But don’t let their playfulness fool you. Underneath their pranks, lies a more serious side. It is said that the Sylphira guard some of the Grove’s most ancient and powerful secrets. Rumor has it they also have the sacred moonstones, that have been lost to the realm for centuries, hidden away in the darkest corners where even light dares not tread.
There are lots of things we still don’t know about the Grove, some things we never will. But there is one thing everyone in Mytharia knows. Magic runs wild here. More so than in any other region. It’s as if the very air is so thick with enchantments you can taste it, making it both a place of wonder, with a very delicate, tantalizing touch of danger. Spells and powers are known to be erratic in the Grove, with even the most seasoned mages finding their magic a little unpredictable. It’s said that if you try to cast a simple charm to find your way, you might end up hovering three feet in the air instead. Or worse, your shoes might decide they’ve had enough of you and wander off. This, of course, is one reason why Granny Elara prefers to live just beyond the Grove in Oracle’s Hollow, where magic behaves itself a bit better.
And so, should you ever step into Moonstone Grove, remember: keep your wits about you, and think about leaving a trail of breadcrumbs. If anything, it might just please the sprites enough to lead you home.
